Our research program aims to elucidate the molecular function of DNA modifications in normal cells leading to the understanding of defective pathways in cancer. A hallmark of many cancers is the redistribution of DNA methylation manifesting by global hypomethylation, and hypermethylation of CpG islands. 5-hydroxymethylcytosine, the base we have identified and demonstrated to be enriched in terminally differentiated normal cells, was found depleted in cancer cell lines and primary tumors.
