Ludwig Lausanne’s Johanna Joyce begins EACR presidency

Johanna Joyce, Ludwig Cancer Research Lausanne
Johanna Joyce

Ludwig Lausanne’s Johanna Joyce began in June a two-year term as President of the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR). In addition to promoting broad scientific collaboration, exchange and training, the EACR President oversees organizational strategy and leads efforts to support early-career scientists, advocate for the field and foster an inclusive international research community. Johanna brings to this role internationally recognized scientific and institutional leadership. An authority on the tumor microenvironment (TME), she has made seminal contributions to understanding how interactions between cancer cells and the surrounding immune, vascular and stromal microenvironments drive tumor progression, metastasis and responses to therapy. Beyond her research, Johanna has addressed challenges facing scientists and the broader scientific enterprise. She has explored the structural factors that contribute to the widening gender gap at senior levels of academic research and proposed strategies to reduce this disparity while improving the retention of early-career scientists in academia. She has also helped shape discussion of the growing global burden of cancer, identifying policy priorities that could strengthen Europe’s response to this challenge. We are confident that the EACR and the wider cancer research community will thrive under her leadership.
