Ludwig Cancer Research statement on the death of former scientific advisor José Baselga

MARCH 22, 2021, NEW YORK – Ludwig Cancer Research extends its deepest condolences to the family and many friends of renowned oncologist and cancer researcher José Baselga, who died March 21, at the age of 61, from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Baselga served as a scientific advisor to the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research for 10 years, helping to steer its scientific strategy and staffing before leaving the Scientific Advisory Committee in 2016. Ludwig remains indebted to him for his consistent support, sagacious advice and steady guidance.

Baselga was acclaimed for his studies on the molecular biology of breast cancer as much as for the translation of such discoveries into new therapies. A recipient of numerous international awards for his scientific achievements, Baselga also served as the president of the American Association for Cancer Research from 2015-16.

His daughter Clara Baselga-Garriga has, in memory of her father, set up a GoFundMe page for donations toward research on Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and its treatment. The fundraiser can be accessed here.
